A Letter to the Mama

Alright folks, I’ve just got to share a little bit about what is on my mind. As a teacher we’d say “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. Maybe for you it’s the Golden Rule or WWJD. Whatever it may be, the bottom line is that we should all do our best to be nice. It seems like an easy enough thing to do, but sadly we all fail. I do my best to take responsibility for the times when I mess up, so it’s so discouraging to see others who go out of their way to make someone feel bad about themselves. I’ve seen countless other mom friends get these sorts of comments on social media and their blogs, but I’ve been fortunate enough to never encounter it, until today. I was tempted to delete it and move on, but that’s not how I roll. Instead I am choosing to replace those negative vibes with a whole lot of positive ones. So mamas, if you are staying at home, working full time, working part time, or work from home, no matter what sort of category or non-category you fall into this one is for you, because you are AWESOME.

Dear Mamas,

You are important. It may not always feel that way, but let’s be honest, your home would fall apart with you gone for too long. Bath giver, boo-boo kisser, snack fetcher, grocery store champion, manner enforcer, butt wiper, laundry wrangler. The hats we wear are endless. I see you and I know those thoughts that sometimes creep into your mind. The comparisons, the questions, the doubts of whether or not you are doing it right or doing enough. I’d just like to tell you that you are doing an amazing job. In fact, no one could do it better than you. Not one other mama would be a better fit for your family. Just you. It doesn’t matter if you take time for yourself to go to the gym or if you just polished off another sleeve of Girl Scout cookies and the closest thing to a gym you’ve seen lately is Jim at the Starbucks drive thru. Maybe you haven’t brushed your hair in two days or maybe you have a monthly appointment for a cut and color and keep things looking in tip top shape. I promise you that it doesn’t matter. At least it’s not what really matters, you know the kind of things that will matter 20 years from now. Your babies see you, and when they see you they see super woman. You are the one who makes things tick, the one who they can always count on, and the one they want a snuggle from when they are sad. All that matters, sweet mama, is that you are doing your best every day. Some days might feel like you’re winning at the whole mom thing and others may feel like a tornado of emotions and fishy crackers just swept through your house. When your head hits the pillow, or maybe more accurately when your spoon hits the tub of ice cream, and you ponder how your day went it only matters that you did your best. Each new day is a brand new page to write your family’s story, and luckily kids are the most forgiving humans on the planet. In case you haven’t heard it lately, you matter, you are needed, you are loved. I know you are working hard and your work is so incredibly important because you are raising tiny humans. So go ahead and take a deep breath of validation and go about the rest of your day knowing that you are “Mama” and that’s the best title you could ever have.

I also want to say that I am thankful for you because as one of you, I can’t do this alone. I am so grateful for the community I’ve built on here of mamas from all over the world, of all backgrounds and parenting styles. You all make me better and spur me on to keep doing my best. I  should add that Dad’s are super great and incredibly important too, obviously, believe me my husband is one of the best there is. This post was just for us mamas though.

Such true words! I’m so sorry someone tried to spread some negativity.. you truly bring a positive outlook to motherhood and there are so many people out here who love what you do and enjoy your posts! Hopefully that person can learn something from you.. usually when people are mean it’s because they are envious or unsatisfied with their own life. Keep up the good work and know that you have lots of supporters out here! 🙂

Ah! That makes my heart so happy to hear. You are a rockstar mama for working hard for your family. I hope your headache goes away and you get all the snuggles and maybe some extra dessert tonight.
