How to Teach Your Child Spanish from Home!

¡Hola! Elouise has started Spanish classes with Homeschool Spanish Academy and I am floored with the results after only 3 of the 25 minutes sessions! I took Spanish every year from 7th grade through sophomore year in college, and I was pretty good at it too! However, the phrase “if you don’t use it, you lose it” has shown itself to be true for me. I wish so badly that I had stuck with perfecting my skill of learning another language, so when we got the chance to partner with HSA I didn’t even hesitate to say yes!

Here’s what you need to know about

Homeschool Spanish Academy:

  • You can try a class for free!

  • You meet with your teacher completely online for a video chat style lesson

  • Teachers have both experience & certification to teach English as a second language and are located in Antigua, Guatemala (where the HSA offices are located)

  • The starting age for students is between 4.5-5 years old (your kiddos will have to sit and participate in a 25 min class

  • All curriculum is provided by HSA (this includes homework emailed to you)

  • Report Cards & Grades are offered for your child

Like I mentioned, we have been doing it for 3 weeks now and I am thoroughly impressed with our teacher, the program’s curriculum, and the way my child has begin to soak up the building blocks of the Spanish language. I’ll walk you through the process from sign up to where we are today!

Once I created an account and got my classes loaded up,  I searched through the teachers and found one that I connected with based on their bio and photo. From there I was able to find a time that she had available that worked for us. You can schedule out as many classes at a time as you want. I chose to only schedule out the current month just in case we needed to make changes. I will say that you are able to reschedule a class as long as you are at least 24 hours out, which is so nice because with kids flexibility is key! After a class is scheduled you get really handy reminder emails that have the direct link to your online class. Our teacher has always been punctual, warm & friendly, and so patient with the kids. Sometimes Sully joins and sometimes he doesn’t. He’s 4.5 so he’s on the younger end to have to sit through a 25 min class. Elouise has been doing some virtual classes already this year so I think it feels more normal for her already. The homework that’s provided is always totally age appropriate and fun for Elouise, she never complains about doing it. Plus it’s related to the content from the previous lesson to help solidify the concepts they learned.

All in all, I am SO glad we are able to provide this program for the kids. Even if we weren’t in a time of life where most things are online, I think I would still choose this program! I love that the teachers are all native Spanish speakers who live in completely different culture than ours, I think it’s so important to expose our kiddos to that. That totally makes this program unique!
